How to Care for Painted Kitchen Cabinets

Simple cleaning and care tips to keep professionally painted kitchen cabinets looking new for years.

By Victor, owner of Fine Finish Cabinets · Updated November 2026

The first few weeks

A professional cabinet finish feels dry quickly, but it keeps curing and hardening for a few weeks. During that time, be gentle: avoid scrubbing, avoid hanging damp towels on doors and wipe up spills promptly.

Everyday cleaning

Clean only with a soft cloth, water and a mild soap. Wipe, then dry with a clean cloth. That is all painted cabinets need.

  • Do not use degreasers, bleach, ammonia, magic erasers or abrasive sponges.
  • Avoid multi-surface sprays that are not meant for painted finishes.
  • Wipe drips around the sink, dishwasher and stove as soon as you see them.

Protect the high-use areas

Doors under the sink, around the trash pull-out and next to the dishwasher get the most moisture and contact. Make sure the dishwasher steam does not hit the cabinet edges when you open it, and avoid leaving wet dish towels hanging on doors.

How long will the finish last?

With normal care, a professionally sprayed finish typically lasts 8 to 12 years. Fine Finish Cabinets backs every project with a 2-year warranty against cracking or peeling.
